What does it mean to Heal ?
Across the Qur’an and Ibn Sīnā's Canon of Medicine, healing appears not as a single act, but as a relationship between body, knowledge, environment, discipline, suffering, and faith.
Qur'an
A language of healing
Illness, suffering, food, purification, mercy, and healing appear throughout the Qur’an—not as a systematic medical science, but as parts of a larger understanding of human life.
The Canon of Medicine
A science of health
Centuries later, Ibn Sīnā attempted to systematically explain how health is maintained, how disease arises, and how physicians might restore the body.

Text
What is the passage actually about ?
The Qur’an and The Canon of Medicine belong to different textual traditions. The Qur’an is a sacred text whose references to illness and healing appear within theological, ethical, legal, and narrative contexts. The Canon is a systematic medical work drawing on Greek, Islamic, Persian, and other intellectual traditions. This archive places them beside one another because, together, they illuminate different ways health, illness, and healing have been understood within Muslim societies.

TWO TEXTS, TWO QUESTIONS
The Qur’an and The Canon of Medicine should not be collapsed into a single “Islamic theory of medicine.” They are fundamentally different kinds of texts.
1Qur'an's Topic
Where does healing belong?
Healing can involve revelation.
Healing can exist within creation.
Human vulnerability changes obligation.
And ultimate healing belongs to God.
2IBN SĪNĀ's Topic
How can health and disease be known?
Observe the body.
Understand its constitution.
Regulate its environment.
Recognize signs.
Infer causes.
Choose treatment.
Evaluate its effects.
WHERE THEY MEET
Perhaps the relationship between the two can be expressed through one pair of passages.
QUR’AN 26:80
وَإِذَا مَرِضْتُ فَهُوَ يَشْفِينِ
When I become ill, He is the one who heals me.
And, centuries later:
IBN SĪNĀ, THE CANON OF MEDICINE
إن الطب علم يتعرف منه أحوال بدن الإنسان
Medicine is a science through which the conditions of the human body are known.
One statement concerns the ultimate source of healing. The other concerns human knowledge of the processes through which health is preserved and restored. They do not answer the same question. That is precisely why placing them beside one another is revealing.
Closing Question
What happens between illness and healing?
A prayer. A meal. Sleep. Movement. A plant.
A pulse beneath a physician's fingers. An interpretation. A medicine.
A body responding—or failing to respond.
Across these two texts, healing does not appear as a single moment.
It becomes a relationship among:
BODY ↔ WORLD ↔ KNOWLEDGE ↔ CARE ↔ FAITH
Perhaps medicine happens somewhere inside those relationships.
